Main opposition and erstwhile governing Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has swiftly moved to enforce its “existing moratorium”, aimed at restraining the endorsement of aspirants in constituencies presently represented by sitting DPP Members of Parliament (MPs).
A viral message to party officials, supporters and cadres, signed by DPP’s Secretary General Peter Mukhito, says the measure aims to maintain harmony, strategic focus and orderly operations within the party’s ranks, among other important things.
However, in an interview, Mukhito emphasized that DPP will still conduct primary elections in all constituencies, including those of sitting MPs, dispelling worries that the moratorium is stifling intraparty democracy or blocking some aspirants.
“We will soon release and share our own calendar of events, including holding of primaries, ahead of the 2025 general election. No worries.
“Otherwise we are just against early endorsement of aspirants who would in turn give open unfair competition to sitting MPs before primaries,” Mukhito said.
According to Mukhito’s message, the endorsement of aspirants “should be deferred until the Central Executive Committee provides further directives”.
“While it is crucial for us to extend a warm welcome to individuals from other political affiliations who wish to join our cause, we must also exercise prudence. Should these new members express a desire to contest in areas already held by DPP MPs, it is vital to make them aware of this moratorium”.
“Our collective vision remains steadfast: to nurture the growth of our party by embracing new members who are committed to our ideals and dedicated to advancing the party’s best interests.
“Your cooperation and dedication to this cause are greatly appreciated. Together, let’s continue to build a stronger, more unified party”.
