Malawi Police Service (MPS) Deputy Inspector General (DIG) responsible for Administration Happy Mkandawire has commended Blue Eagles volleyball club for the efforts it is making towards mobilising resources to enable it to travel to Gaborone, Botswana, for this year’s Zone VI Senior Volleyball Club Championships.
Eagles need about K29 million to send their ladies’ and men’s teams to the regional competition in December.
Mkandawire made the commendation during a fundraising sports tournament that the club organised at the National Police Headquarters in Lilongwe on Saturday and Sunday.
He said it is encouraging to see the club making every effort to mobilise resources for the trip.
“We are greatly encouraged to see all these efforts that the club is making on its own. As a parent of the club, we will also play our part to ensure that the teams travel. The two teams will not just represent us as police but the entire country. So we are encouraging the club to continue with this fundraising drive and we will offer our support at all times,” Mkandawire said.
He then called on other MPS teams to emulate the example that the volleyball club has set.
The volleyball club’s publicity secretary Samuel Gama said so far they have managed to raise over half the required amount.
“We now have K16 million and there is K13 million remaining. We need this money to pay for various needs such as accommodation, food, transportation and payment of affiliation fees for the competition. We are very grateful to all stakeholders who have helped us and we are calling on others to come forward with whatever amount they can manage to give us,” Gama said.
He said they have also organised a Mbuzi Ipite Bonanza at Katoto in Mzuzu on September 20 with a Ng’ombe Ipite Bonanza on the cards in Lilongwe next month.
The weekend events had a social football tournament which took place at Nankhaka Stadium and a women’s volleyball match that was played at Area 30 court between Blue Eagles Ladies and Dealers.
Teams that played in the football bonanza were JTI, Poly Alumni, M’mbelwa and Midazo in a round-robin format, which saw JTI emerging victorious after collecting eight points.
