The Malawi government has taken steps to expedite the shipment of essential equipment stuck at Nacala Port in Mozambique, necessary for the completion of the state-of-the-art National Data Centre in Lilongwe.
The construction project, currently 60% complete, has been delayed due to the Red Sea crisis, which has left containers from India stranded at the port.
Speaking to MIJ Online, Baldwin Chiyamwaka, Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Information, confirmed that they are working closely with Nacala Port authorities to clear the remaining equipment.
According to Chiyamwaka, once completed, the National Data Centre will serve as a central hub for all government data, making it easily accessible and ensuring the safety of sensitive information.
He added that government is committed to migrating all data to the new centre, following a well-planned schedule.
Chiyamwaka indicated that this development marks a significant milestone in enhancing data management and security for Malawi’s government, ushering in a new era of digital transformation.
And on his part, Praveen Sridharla, Team Leader for Data Construction Centre, assured that upon arrival of the equipment, the facility will be completed within two months, meeting their deadline since construction began in July 2023.
