Court clears Mwanamvekha!

Former Finance Minister Joseph Mwanamveka has been discharged from a case he was been accused for making illicit payment of government funds amounting to 18 Billion Kwacha  to the Homeland Security Ministry for the purchase of various equipment for the Malawi Prison Service between 2019 to 2020.

Mwanamvekha: Cleared.

Mwanamveka was arrested alongside others including former minister of homeland security Nicholas Dausi for abusing their position in the purchasing exercise of the Malawi police service equipment such as cuffs, cups and belts.

Earlier today, High Court Judge Violet Chipao granted permission for  Mwanamveka and his legal representative, Kalekeni Kaphale, to excuse themselves from the court proceedings. However, Mwanamveka is required to make himself available to testify as a witness in the case whenever needed.

In an interview with MIJ Online, Khaphale, said the discharge comes as the state has failed to provide enough evidence concerning the case.

Additionally, Kaphale said as of now the defence is waiting for the official discharge certificate from the office of Director of Public Prosecution.
