Scores of music lovers attended a youth concert, powered by Vitumbiko Mumba and the Malawi Congress Party (MCP), at Civo Stadium in Lilongwe on Saturday.
Dubbed ‘Chakwera Kutchaya Kugwetsa Youth Concert’, the show, whose entry was a voter registration certificate, was aimed at encouraging people, particularly young people, to register ahead of the 2025 general elections.
Several artists, including Maso Awards and Entertainers of the Year nominee Jetu, who has just released a new single titled ‘Waimanya’, shared the stage at the concert.
The Blantyre-based artist was the centre of attraction at the gig and her performance enticed Minister of Tourism Vera Kamtukule to join her on stage.
Other notable artists at the show included Lulu, Symon and Kendall, Born Afrikan, Dan Lu and Malinga Mafia, who was one of the outstanding performers. In between the routines, some fans were invited to the stage to sing and dance and were given money by politicians. There was also a special moment during the show when Minister of Information Moses Kunkuyu joined singer and guitarist Lulu on stage.
Kunkuyu showed his skills on the guitar, with Lulu moving to playing drums. Mumba introduced a music challenge at the concert.
He dubbed it Dolo Kwambiri Amavotera Chakwera Challenge. The challenge, according to Mumba, would see the one who composes the best song walking away with K5 million.
“The youth are leaders of today and must go and register.
“When we have more resources, we will organise another concert,” Mumba said.
Kunkuyu said the concert allowed youths to discuss important issues.
“I am happy that the youth have enjoyed what their lovely party, MCP, brought them. After this concert, these youths will encourage their friends to go and register for the 2025 general elections,” he said.
