ADDRESSING DELEGATES—Haiya

Football Association of Malawi (Fam) has said it will save an estimated K140 million per year on transportation costs of its affiliates following the purchase of brand-new vehicles.

Fam President Fleetwood Haiya disclosed this after the association handed over four utility vehicles to Super League of Malawi (Sulom) and three Regional Football Associations after the annual general meeting (AGM) in Mangochi on Saturday.

According to Haiya, the association spends an estimated K200 million to cater for transportation costs of the affiliates during meetings and other events.

“It might look expensive to purchase vehicles but it has a huge impact on improving service delivery. These vehicles will help the member associations a lot, in terms of running their operations, such that we should see a quick realisation of our goals and objectives at the national level deriving from this investment.

“It will be cost-saving in the long term. Instead of paying transport allowances, we will just put fuel in their cars,” Haiya said.

The purchase of the utility vehicles is part of Haiya’s manifesto, named ‘Transforming the Game’.

Haiya said the four vehicles have cost the association about K74 million.

Fam will be responsible for the maintenance and service of the four vehicles for a period of three years.

On top of that, the association will be responsible for paying salaries of drivers of the vehicles.

On his part, Sulom Vice President Ronald Chiwaula hailed Fam for fulfilling its promise.

“We did not expect it. The vehicles will help us a lot to improve service delivery so that we take football to the next level,” he said.

On behalf of the three regions, Central Region Football Association (CRFA) Vice Chairperson Goodwell Chinjoka said the vehicles would ease mobility challenges that they face.

At the meeting, delegates approved the admission of Eastern Region Football Association.

This means the number of member associations has increased to 10 from nine.
