Bowling all-rounder Sungeni Kananji has taken the Harare Women’s 1st Division in Zimbabwe by storm in her two matches for the White Rhino’s CC.
Kananji has already had heads turning in her debut match for White Rhinos CC on March 23, when she scored 40 off just 22 balls to take White Rhinos to a respectable score of 119 against table toppers Gladiators.
White Rhinos lost a closely contested match.
Cricket Malawi Head of Cricket Operations Arjun Menon said Kananji, in her second match for the club against Bindura CC, displayed another batting masterclass, scoring 65 not out off 58 balls, which included 10 boundaries and one six.
“White Rhinos amassed a decent total of 225 for the loss of 4 wickets in 32 overs. Bindura in reply found the going tough and only managed 109 for the loss of 8 wickets in 32 overs. White Rhinos [ended up] winning by a huge margin of 116 runs.
“While Sungeni [Kananji] was named player of the match, her compatriots Lydia Dimba and Praise Maziya also contributed to the win with scores of 36 off 38 and 29 not out off 31 balls for White Rhinos in the impressive win.
“Sungeni has now scored 105 runs in just two matches while White Rhinos have surprised many and sit second on the league table with 3 wins and 1 loss above 3rd placed Zimbabwean powerhouse club Takashinga,” Menon said.
Kananji said the keys were the basics she learnt at Cricket Academy.
“We have settled easily because we learnt the basics while at home,” she said.
The Malawian trio had the cricket fraternity in Zimbabwe talking, which has resulted in many positive comments about the recent strides cricket in Malawi has made, especially in the women’s game.
The club’s next fixture will be against Takashinga which will be a must-win encounter to keep in touch with Gladiators CC, who sit on top of the table unbeaten in four matches.
