
The beauty of art and its finesse will be on display by the womenfolk in the realm of visual art at Kaliso Art Gallery in Lilongwe during the second edition of the Female Visual Artists Art Exhibition dubbed Chiphadzuwa on Saturday.
The exhibition running up to March 30 2025 comes in timely as the world celebrates the International Women’s Day on the same day.
The International Women’s Day is celebrated annually as a focal point in the women’s rights movement.
Since 1911, the International Women’s Day belongs to all who care about women’s equality, raising awareness about discrimination, take action to forge gender parity as well as celebrating women’s achievement.
Led by Kaliso Arts Gallery founder Evelyn Chisambiro, who is also part of the exhibitors, the exhibition is titled Chiphadzuwa (Beauty) because it looks deeper to give women visual artists the space to express their definition of beauty.
“Beauty is not only about appearance but it is a lot of things, Chiphadzuwa is expressing what have and that will be seen through their amazing artworks,” she said on Thursday.
Chisambiro said the pre-opening of the exhibition tomorrow which will also be spiced up by music performances from Chikondi Wiseman and Neo Metals, is part of reaching out to prominent buyers as well as giving them buying opportunities.
“Through this pre-opening, we want to encourage people to love and buy original artworks. There is also an opportunity of buyers getting artworks at a discount,” she said.
Chisambiro said the artists with their brushes, canvases and paints have been creating and that now it is time for people to sample and buy.
Apart from Chisambiro, some of the artists exhibiting their works are Tee Mlinga, Vanessa Maganga, Louisa Kanchewa, Amabel Banda, Mable Tikhale Wasi, Faith Mzoma, Alinafe Chapungu and Cindy Chilimampunga.
In another development, celebrated fashion designer Lilly Alfonso is in Zimbabwe representing Malawi at the Creative Economy Week organised by British Council.
The Creative Economy Week under the theme ‘Empowering Fashion Designers and Entrepreneurs to Succeed started on March 5 and ends on March 10 2025.
Alfonso through her 100 Year Plan has partnered British Council in a move that aims at supporting the fashion business in the country.
“It is an important platform looking into among others, insights into the latest fashion trends and industry developments as well as creating wealth and managing finances,” she said.
