Aspiring member of Parliament for Thyolo Thekerani Constituency Walker Jiyani Thursday commissioned a modern bridge in the area, urging locals to support his development vision.
Jiyani said he wanted to contest as lawmaker after observing that the area had not developed despite having members of Parliament who represented constituents in the august House.
Jiyani expressed frustration with disparities in development projects across areas, emphasising that leaders should prioritise the needs of people.
“I feel sad when I see other areas developing. I ask myself why some leaders think of themselves at the expense of many people. I am, therefore, coming in to make sure that development is effected in this area,” he said.
Jiyani added that school-going children had been struggling to access education services due to mobility challenges as there was no bridge.
“A lot of people have been facing challenges when it comes to crossing Chimlamba River. I believe that, following the construction of this bridge, they will be able to safely cross the river to various destinations,” Jiyani said.
During the commissioning ceremony, Jiyani appealed to community members to back his agenda, which, he said, focused on quality service delivery.
“Actually, I wanted to do this in 2021 but was blocked by some politicians who had been lying that they would come in and assist people. Come 2025, they have not done anything, hence my efforts,” he said.
On his part, Senior Chief Nsabwe encouraged community members to take good care of the new infrastructure.
Nsabwe highlighted the bridge’s significance, particularly for school-going children who previously struggled to cross Chimlamba River when heading to Nsabwe Primary School.
“I am very happy with the bridge as it has come at the right time. People of this area have been struggling to cross Chimlamba River, a development that was also affecting access to education among school-going children,” Nsabwe said.
The bridge has been constructed using funds from Jiyani’s family.
