Toll gates rake in K12.7 billion

The Roads Fund Administration (RFA) has said it has collected K12.7 billion since introducing the tolling system.

RFA spokesperson Masauko Ngwaluko told Times Business on Thursday the amount is gross revenue since inception of the toll gates in November, 2021.

“The RFA is financing road maintenance and rehabilitation using the funds which are procured by implementing agencies such as the Roads Authority and Local Councils,” he said.

He said RFA has already spent a total of K3.8 billion on rehabilitation of the tolled road from Kamwamba to Zalewa turn off section using the toll fees.

“The toll fees are being used to maintain the M1 toll road,” he said.

Currently works are in progress from Kamwamba to Zalewa turn off, a 6 kilometre stretch.

In future, Ngwaluko said any tolled road will benefit from the toll fees.

Figures provided show that in 2024 alone, RFA collected a gross of K8.6 billion from the toll gates.

In October last year, RFA Chief Executive Officer Stewart Malata told the Parliamentary Committee on Commissions, Statutory Authorities and State Enterprises that there were plans to raise toll fees.

He said the toll fees were to be raised in order to generate more resources for rehabilitation of tolled roads, construction of more tollgates and meet tollgates operational costs.

Malata said the toll fees were to be raised in December but there was no motivation or motorists to pay the new rates.

There were also plans to install a toll gate on the M1 at Gwai located between Nkhamenya in Kasungu and Jenda in Mzimba.
