Mighty Wanderers President Thomson Mpinganjira has injected about K375 million into the renovations of the team’s club house, Times Sport has learnt.
Mpinganjira said he has pumped in the money to help the club complete its commercialisation drive to become self-reliant.
The Nomads boss said about K225 million was spent on mounting a new sliding gate, car park with carport-for over 11 vehicles, merchandise office and tiled floor.
He said the amount also covers works for roofed ceiling offices for the teams chief executive officer Panganeni Ndovi, technical director Yasin Osman and an administration office, stores for sports equipment, casino, gym and sports shop, main bar and the VIP lounge.
Mpinganjira said the plan was to also build a multi-million kwacha conference room for business purposes.
“The place was too dilapidated. We had to strip down everything. However, we have done that and the rest. We are now in the final part, which is the conference room, which we will hire out to generate revenue as part of the commercialisation process,” he said.
Meanwhile, one of the club’s former players Ojukwu Malunga hailed Mpinganjira for the gesture saying the renovations were long overdue.
“I think Mpinganjira is a big dreamer who practices what he says. I have heard him on many occasions saying he wants to make Wanderers one of the best teams not only in Malawi but in Africa; this manifests what he says,” Malunga said.
Wanderers Development Manager Andrew Kalinde said the construction of a conference room would begin later this month.
“The president is determined to have all the works completed as soon as possible. As a club we are very grateful to him,” he said
The club house also has a hostel—for newly recruited players— who would use it as a waiting bay before relocating to the assigned houses.
