HABITUAL SCORER—Temwa

United States–based Malawi Women’s National Football Team striker Temwa Chawinga continues to hog the limelight as she tied her own record of scoring in eight consecutive matches.

Temwa scored one goal as Kansas City Current defeated Utah Royals 3-0 in the National Women’s Super League (NWSL) at CPKC Stadium Sunday.

The Malawian has scored in eight consecutive matches for the club in a regular season.

“With a feed from Michelle Cooper, forward Temwa Chawinga opened the scoring with a record-tying strike in the 22nd minute, marking her eighth consecutive NWSL regular season appearance with a goal,” the Kansas website reported.

So far, Temwa has scored in every match she has played for her club this season.

She has three goals in three matches.

Cooper doubled the lead in the 37th minute before Debinha sealed the victory in the second minute of first-half stoppage time.

Prior to the goals, Temwa had a chance to open the scoring in the ninth minute when Debinha flicked the ball forward for Cooper, who laid it for the Malawian but her effort went high.

Temwa had a ball into the net for the second time in the 25th minute but it was disallowed after a VAR review.

Her impressive start to the 2025 season is a statement of intent that the Malawian is the favourite to break records.

Temwa said she was happy with her performance in the early stages of the season.

“I am really motivated. I am working very hard to help the team earn maximum points,” she said.

The former Wuhan Jiangda striker has set her sights on winning trophies in United States.

“It is a dream for every player to win trophies. We will keep pushing. It is not easy but we can do it,” she said.

Last season, Temwa smashed several records in her debut season.

She won the golden boot award with 20 goals—becoming the first female player to achieve that feat.

She beat Sam Kerr’s record for most goals in a regular season of 18 goals in 2019.

Besides that, Temwa was named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) after she scored against all 13 teams.
