Kansas City Current attacker Temwa Chawinga and Mighty Mukuru Wanderers playmaker Isaac ‘Chair’ Kaliati were named best female and male footballer, respectively, in Entertainers of the Year awards, an initiative of the Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC).
The two won the awards during this year’s event, which was held at Bingu International Convention Centre in Lilongwe on Saturday.
Temwa won various awards including that of Most Valuable Player (MVP) in the National Women’s Super League (NWSL) in United States of America while Kaliati won the TNM Super League Golden Boot award after guiding Wanderers to finish behind champions Silver Strikers.
Kaliati also won the Sports Personality of the Year award.
And, in a remarkable sweep, he scooped the prestigious Entertainer of the Year award.
Malawi National Netball Team shooter Joyce Mvula was named Netballer of the Year while her former side Blue Eagles Sisters took home the award for Best Netball Team of the Year accolade.
Ascent Academy won Best Female Football Team of the Year while Mighty Mukuru Wanderers were crowned Best Male Football Team of the Year.
Chairperson for the awards, Chisomo Mwamadi, said sports entertains people such that athletes have to be honoured.
“We are happy that our sports individuals have been honoured with big prizes tonight. We are hoping that the next event will have better prizes than this,” Mwamadi said.
Entertainers of the Year Awards aim to celebrate and promote excellence in various fields.
This year’s awards celebrated outstanding achievements in various fields including sports.
Scores of people gathered at the event to witness the honouring of 51 outstanding nominees.
The ceremony was attended by several dignitaries, including Minister of Information and Digitalisation Moses Kunkuyu and Minister of Local Government, Unity and Culture Richard Chimwendo Banda.
