Temwa Chawinga bags 2025 first award

Malawi Women’s National Football Team striker Temwa Chawinga has been named Player of the Month for March in the National Women’s Super League (NWSL) in the US.

This follows her impressive performance for Kansas City Current having scored three goals in the opening three matches of the season.

Temwa is the first player to win the award in the 2025 season.

In an interview Friday, Temwa was thrilled with the award.

“The best is yet to come from me. I believe there is no substitute for hard work,” she said.

Her club heaped praise on the talented Malawian after winning the award.

Last season, Temwa won the same award on three occasions in 2024 to become the first player since 2014 to win it three times in a single regular season.

“Chawinga has powered Kansas City to an unblemished 3-0-0 record as one of the two teams without a loss or draw during the first month of the NWSL regular season,” Kansas City website reported.

Scorchers coach Lovemore Fazili praised Temwa for her exploits.

“She is a professional player on-and-off-the pitch. I am happy for all the Scorchers players,” Fazili said.

The Malawian had a good debut season in 2024 after rewriting the history books in the NWSL.

She won the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award and the golden boot award after scoring 20 goals-becoming the first female player to achieve that feat in the history of the NWSL.

Additionally, the Malawian scored against all the 13 teams last season.
