Malawi Women’s National Football Team captain Tabitha Chawinga has hailed her Zambian counterpart Barbra Banda for winning the 2024 Caf Women’s Footballer of the Year award.
Caf announced all the winners during a gala night at Palais des Congress, Marrakech, Morocco Monday.
Tabitha and her sister Temwa Chawinga, who were nominated for the accolade, did not make the top three. But the Olympique Lyonnais star felt Banda deserved the award.
“Allow me to congratulate Barbara Banda for her award. Southern Africa women’s football has won,” Tabitha said.
Banda won the award after beating Moroccan and AS Far star Sanna Mssoudy and Nigerian goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie, who plays for Paris FC in France.
The Zambian had an incredible year in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) as she helped her side, Orlando Pride, win the title.
Last month, Banda was voted as BBC Women’s Footballer of the Year.
She made history as the first African to be voted into the Fifpro Women’s World XI.
This is the sixth time the award has eluded Tabitha.
Tabitha had a good debut season with Paris Saint-Germain, having been named Player of the Season in France.
