Football lovers in Karonga District might have been disappointed with the performance of one of their teams, Baka City, which has been relegated in its maiden season in the TNM Super League.
But their disappointment will be short-lived as Northern Region Football Association (NRFA) League Mzuzu 12 Premier Division team Songwe Border United is fighting hard to ensure that the district maintains two teams in the top flight league.
With matches in the regional league drawing to a close in the next two weeks, Songwe are topping the table with 24 points from 11 matches.
The team has a five-point gap with second-placed Chintheche, who have 19 points from a similar number of matches.
This is despite Songwe losing 2-1 to Chilumba Barracks in a Karonga derby at Majaliro in the lakeshore district.
But with three rounds to wrap up the season, Songwe General Secretary Palisha Swira said they believed it was just a matter of time before they realised their Super League dream.
“We are a community team that is being pushed forward by well-wishers. We have come a long way to be where we are today and we just need to continue collecting points. We might have lost to Chilumba but we have picked ourselves up and are looking forward to the next match,” Swira said.
NRFA General Secretary Masiya Nyasulu said they wanted to be the first team to wrap up the 2024 season.
“We are racing against time, considering the rains which have started falling across the country. So, we just have to make sure that our matches are concluded in time before the rains intensify. We do not want to face situations where matches get postponed because of rains. So, we are working hard to ensure that everything goes according to plan,” Nyasulu said.
Songwe’s next match is against Ekwaiweni Tafika Sports Academy at Ekwaiweni in Mzimba District on Sunday.
