The race for the 2024 TNM Super League title has stiffened with top two sides Silver Strikers and Mighty Mukuru Wanderers failing to secure maximum points Sunday.
Silver were held to a 2-2 draw by Creck Sporting Club whereas Wanderers lost 1-0 to Karonga United.
The result means Silver are six points clear of second-placed Mighty Mukuru Wanderers.
At Aubrey Dimba Stadium in Mchinji, Silver twice came from behind to force a draw against stubborn Creck.
Forward Muhammad Sulumba twice gave Creck the lead and in similar fashion, midfielder Uchizi Vunga twice came to the rescue of the Central Bankers.
Vunga was voted player of the match following his contribution to Silver.
Silver Coach Peter Mponda said it was not the result they wanted.
“Our performance was encouraging but the result was disappointing,” he said.
Creck Coach MacDonald Mtetemera said it was not a true reflection of the match.
“We were supposed to win the match,” Mtetemera said.
At Karonga Stadium, Alfred Chizinga’s fifth minute goal was enough for Karonga United to secure maximum points against Wanderers.
Wanderers Coach Meck Mwase said they conceded too early and it was difficult to come back into the game.
“It is unfortunate that we lost. We tried everything but we had no luck. We will still fight until the end and we are still in contention,” Mwase said.
Karonga Assistant Coach Chris Chinkwita said the players followed instructions.
“We knew that Wanderers attack dangerously through the flanks; so, we locked them. We also advised the players to avoid giving away set-pieces to Wanderers. Otherwise, the attendance also motivated us to do well,” he said.
In another match Sunday, Mighty Tigers beat Bangwe All Stars 1-0 at Mpira Stadium in Blantyre. Daniel Shadreck scored the lone goal in the second half.
