Regional coaches face revolt

The re-election of National Football Coaches Association (NFCA) Chairperson Aubrey Nankhuni has left the administrative future of his competitor and others hanging  in balance following a revolt at regional level, Times Sport can reveal.

Central Region Football Coaches Committee Chairperson Audrow Makonyola, who lost to Nankhuni 11-13 during the polls in Salima on Saturday, is reportedly facing a vote of no confidence alongside his peers as others within the committee were advocating for their removal.

DOWNPLAYED THE ISSUE—Chimbetete

Times Sport has learnt that Makonyola and colleagues Arthur Chimbetete (Eastern Region) and Kondwa Ikwanga (Northern Region) were being forced to step down after their bid to get positions in NFCA ended in vain.

Eastern Region Football Coaches Committee Vice Chairperson Christopher they wanted Chimbetete and others to step down from their positions. Muhajiri confirmed that

“I do not know which constitution he [Chimbetete] is using but if he contested and lost at national level, then he must go. There are about six people who are supporting this decision,” Muhajiri said.

Another member from the Central Region body said a meeting to remove Makonyola and his colleagues who lost during the elections was on the cards.

“We are simply waiting for them to call for a post-mortem meeting on the elections. If they do not, we will deem them as ordinary members.

“For instance, there is no way a Super League Executive Member would cling to power after losing in an election at the Football Association of Malawi,” the source said.

Times Sport could not get hold of Makonyola and Ikwanga as they were unavailable.

However, Chimbetete downplayed the matter.

“I am aware of such reports from some of our members here but it is just a misunderstanding.

“Our constitution is silent on the matter. I cannot step down following the loss,” Chimbetete said.

New NFCA Publicity Secretary Milias Jegwe Pofera said the three were still holding their positions since the constitution was silent on the matter.

“Our hands are tied. We cannot do anything on the matter for now as no law has been violated,” Jegwe said.

On his part, Nankhuni said committee members would meet soon to consider the matter.

“Firstly, the three who lost the elections are coaches and belong to us [NFCA]. This is a situation that has come about following the elections we had. It is a big lesson learnt and we will look into the matter for future references but, constitutionally, I do not think we have a case here,” Nankhuni said.
