Chitipa District Council has bought four motorbikes for primary education advisers (PEAs) valued at K15 million using Other Recurrent Transaction (ORT) and partly Malawi Education Reform Programme (Merp).

The council has also procured one motorbike for a female teacher at Muwona Primary School in Misuku and 18 bicycles valued at K6 million for female teachers across the district with funding from the World Bank-funded Merp.

Chitipa district commissioner MacMillan Magomero said his office decided to procure motorbikes for PEAs working in hard-to-reach areas to ease mobility challenges.

He said this on Tuesday at Nachiwe Primary School during the handover of the five motorbikes and 18 bicycles.

“Supervision is key when it comes to attaining quality education. That is why we procured the motorbikes to ease mobility challenges for PEAs,” said Magomero.

Chitipa district chief education officer Clement Nyirenda said the council has come up with a District Education Plan to support girls in the district by deploying female teachers in schools to act as role models.

“Female teachers would not want to go to teach in remote areas because of lack of resources. Some of the challenges are mobility and housing as well as lack of water and electricity,” he said.

Nyirenda said one way of enticing female teachers to teach in rural schools was to give them bicycles.

“Four motorbikes will go to PEAs but one, which has been procured using Merp funding, will be given to a female teacher who is willing to teach at Muwona Primary School in Misuku in the district,” he said.

Kawale Education Zone PEA Jane Mukumbwa thanked the council for the motorbikes, saying they will motivate her and other PEAs to work hard.

The council last procured motorbikes for the PEAs 21 years ago.
