The funding will facilitate the construction of 10 housing units with accompanying toilets in Chikuse village, one of the hardest-hit areas in Chikwawa.

Nine houses have already been completed, and work on sanitation facilities will commence following the additional funding.

In a press statement, General Manager for the Nchalo Estate, Ricky Pillay, reaffirmed Illovo’s commitment to supporting recovery efforts and enhancing livelihoods of affected Malawians.

And on his part, District Commissioner Nardin Kamba expressed gratitude to Illovo Sugar for providing housing facilities to vulnerable villagers who survived Cyclone Freddy.

“We are grateful to Illovo for their untiring quest to ensure that the houses they are building will be complete with sanitation facilities,” Kamba said.

The cyclone devastated several districts in the Southern Region, leaving over 1,000 people dead and displacing thousands.

Illovo’s humanitarian response followed a request by Cyclone Freddy Recovery Goodwill Ambassadors, former Presidents Dr. Joyce Banda and Dr. Bakili Muluzi.
