No new sports projects, ministry gets K30.9 billion

The government will not embark on new sports projects in the 2025/ 26 Financial Year as it will focus on completion of some of the stalled ones.

This is according to a budget document which Minister of Finance and Economic Affairs Simplex Chithyola Banda presented in Parliament Friday.

The 2025-2026 budget is pegged at K8.05 trillion. According to the budget document, the Ministry of Youth and Sports has been allocated K30.9 billion, jumping from last year’s K11 billion.

TO BE COMPLETED—Griffin Saenda Sports Complex

But the sports projects that have been highlighted in the budget include the stalled projects of Griffin Saenda Indoor Sports Complex in Area 48 in Lilongwe and reconstruction of Aquatic Sports Complex at Kamuzu Institute for Sports in Area 17 Lilongwe.

Chithyola Banda did not disclose how much has been allocated to each of the two stalled projects.

The two projects which hosted some of the games during the 2022 Africa Union Sports Council Region 5 Games, each need more than K7 billion to be completed.

This comes amid rising costs of commodities.

In addition, the change in the contract sum is also as a result of change of scope of work.

The Ministry of Youth and Sports already got the go ahead from Public Procurement and Disposal of Assets Authority (PPDA) for works to resume.

The prioritisation of Griffin Saenda Complex could be good news to Netball Association of Malawi as the country intends to host the 2025 edition of Africa Netball Championship.

In a related development, BAT Ground is another project which will be prioritised in the 2025- 2026 Financial Year.

Spokesperson for Ministry of Youth and Sports MacMillan Mwale asked for more time before commenting on the matter.

“We need to look at the statement,” Mwale said.

Other projects that will be prioritised under the ministry include construction of Achinyamata Centre, National Youth Centre in Mzuzu and National Youth Service.
