Othakarhaka Passing on the Kindness, a non-governmental organisation (NGO), has donated maize to 25 food-insecure households in Traditional Authority (T/A) Mkanda in Mulanje District.

The beneficiaries included the elderly and those with chronic illnesses, with each household receiving a 20 kilogramme bag of maize to cushion them from the current food crisis in the country.

Othakarhaka Passing on the Kindnessexecutive director Ida Puliwa said the right to food is a fundamental human right, adding that they are committed to supporting sustainable initiatives towards food security amid the impact of climate change.

“We all have to do our part to safeguard those facing challenges of food insecurity, especially the elderly,” she said.

Reacting to the gesture, Senior Chief Mkanda thanked the NGO for the donation, saying the maize will enhance the livelihoods of the elderly.

She said: “We are living in a difficult period when it is hard to find money.

“I am, therefore, thankful to the organisation for always remembering us.”

One of the beneficiaries, Asileni Ndawala, 74, from Kazembe Village in T/A Mkanda, said the maize they received will change his life as he struggles to find food daily.

“These items came at the right time as I am struggling to get money to buy food and basic necessities for my children at home,” he said.
