By Bernard Mhone:
New Dawn Boxing Promotion (NDBP) has revamped boxing in Mzuzu City after securing K12 million sponsorship from Chisanga Holdings Limited (CHL), ending a five-year bouts drought.
Following the support, the stable will stage a non-title heavyweight bout between Limbani Lano and Brighton Mcheni set for December 29 at Chisanga Complex in Mzuzu.
NDBP Managing Director Mike Chimaliza said the fights would feature boxers from Mzuzu, Lilongwe and Blantyre.
“For a long time, boxing lovers in Mzuzu and surrounding areas were unable to enjoy bouts due to the lack of a suitable venue. But now the drought is over.
“We are excited to partner Chisanga Complex Centre, who have provided us with a perfect venue for the bouts. The partnership marks a new chapter for boxing enthusiasts in the region,” Chimaliza said.
CHL Manager Arnold Soko said the partnership would revive boxing in the Northern Region as it was on the deathbed due to lack of fights.
“People love boxing here [in Mzuzu] but they lack sponsors. We have assured them that we have passion for the sport and, through this partnership, we intend to revive boxing in the region. We hope that Northern Region-based boxers will get a chance to be exposed,” Soko said.
Meanwhile, boxers Lano and Mcheni have stepped up preparations for the contest.
The bill is set to feature about five supporting fights in various weight classes.
