Netball Association of Malawi (Nam) has postponed Level 2 Coaching courses due to lukewarm response, Times Sport has learnt.
Initially, the course was supposed to start in Blantyre on Monday and end on April 2, whereas in Mzuzu the course was expected to run from April 7 to 16.
In a statement, Nam says it regrets rescheduling the courses to a later date next month.
“We regret to inform you that the Level 2 Coaching Course scheduled for 24 March to 2 April, 2024 in Blantyre and 7 to 16 April in Mzuzu has been postponed. This decision was made due to the insufficient numbers registered for the course.
“We, therefore, request clubs and sponsors to help in paying for their coaches,” the statement, dated March 22, 2025 and signed by the association’s general secretary Yamikani Khungwa-Kauma, reads.
Khungwa-Kauma said they were targeting at least 40 coaches each in Southern and Northern regions.
“At least 10 [coaches] registered but we wanted 40 coaches to attend the training. If we had 20 applications each in both regions, then we could have continued,” she said.
However, retired netballers Annie Mopiha and Neffie Kam’mata had mixed views.
Mopiha said Nam should have proceeded to do the exercise with those who have registered.
“Otherwise, some [people] can easily misinterpret that they were looking for specific individuals,” she said.
On her part, Kam’mata said Nam should revise some conditions, including the registration fee, as K40,000 was on the higher side.
“Nam should have opened up the course to everyone who has a basic certificate rather than accommodating coaches attached to clubs only.
“On the other hand, the registration fee is on the higher side and, with the current economic situation, Nam should have reduced the fee,” Kam’mata said.
Nam has embarked on a rebuilding exercise, hence the introduction of capacity-building activities in various aspects of the game, including technical.
