Mulanje storm, rains displace 689 households

By Grecium Gama:

Mulanje District Commissioner David Gondwe has said one person was injured while 689 households have been displaced following a storm and rains.

He said the development has led to the temporary closure of Mtiza Primary School.

“The storm swept through areas under traditional authorities Juma, Ndanga, Mabuka and Tombondiya, leaving behind a trail of destruction to homes and infrastructure.

“The heavy rains have also disrupted education as Mtiza Primary School has been temporarily closed,” Gondwe said,

He urged residents to stay vigilant, stressing the importance of taking precautionary measures to avoid further injuries and loss of property.

According to expert Symon Mandala, people have to be careful during the rainy season.

“Avoid crossing flooding rivers as they could be death traps. Only cross when water levels are low and that one is able to see the supporting structures. Be on the lookout for leaning trees. Trees provide scenic beauty and shade in our surroundings. However, some leaning trees can also pose danger by causing injury or loss of life, besides damage to property and assets.

“Prevent flooding in residential or business premises due to limited, blocked or the absence of drainage systems by making sure there is a functional drainage system. Carry out thorough inspection of the entire drainage system, remove any trash that may block the drainage system and address all defects that may be detected,” he said.
