Mukuru partners Nam in K675 million deal for Under-21

By Mwayi Gowelo:

Financial services provider Mukuru has signed a K675 million sponsorship deal with the Netball Association of Malawi (Nam).

The three-year partnership was unveiled Friday at Mount Soche Hotel in Blantyre.

In the agreement, Nam would be getting an annual allocation of K225 million, catering for the junior Queens (K165 million) and Under-21 National League (K60 million).

This sponsorship aims to accelerate the development and competitiveness of netball in Malawi with a particular focus on the Malawi Queens and the Under-21 teams.

Mukuru Country Manager Pride Chiwaya said this sponsorship fulfills one of the firm’s goals which is to empower the girl child.

“We decided to partner Nam because this aligns with our goal to empower the girl child. We believe that this partnership will give these young girls the opportunity to display their talent on a broader scale and even compete on global stages,” Chiwaya said.

Nam President Vitumbiko Mwandemange-Gubuduza said the sponsorship is a game-changer.

“This sponsorship is coming at a time when we had a gap especially in terms of infrastructure and training. It is very important for the under-21 team to be inspired and this sponsorship fulfills that,” Mwandemange-Gubuduza said.

Malawi National Council of Sports’ Chief Executive Officer Henry Kamata said this sponsorship would boost development and growth in netball.

“We are very excited about this sponsorship from Mukuru. When sports associations adhere to good governance, they get these types of results. We believe that netball will grow even more because of this sponsorship,” Kamata said.

The Malawi Under-21 National Netball Team is expected to compete in the Netball World Youth Cup in Gibraltar in September.
