The songs, dances, poems and readings were testimony enough of the excitement among learners of Lunzu Primary School in Blantyre on Tuesday as they welcomed a library opened by Mr Luc’s Libraries.
In their artistry, the learners spoke volumes of how important a library is to their education and that the well-decorated Mr Luc’s library by visual artist Jim Alifisha, has come at the right time as they did not have a proper library.
Spearheaded by Luc Deschamps, who is also French Honorary Consul to Malawi and director of Jacaranda Foundation, the library is stocked with a number of books that will help promote reading and writing culture among the learners.
Deschamps said he was happy to open the 32nd library through the Mr Luc’s Libraries project and that so far they have reached 70,000 children.
“Our goal at Jacaranda Foundation is to give children a chance to access quality reading books. When children start using the library which has books that are linked with decorations, illustrations, colours and art they will improve in reading and writing,” he said.
Deschamps also called upon people in the country to join hands and help communities to set up libraries which are crucial for offering information.
“I want to encourage people in Malawi to donate books. Knowledge is power and we can only get it through books,” he said. The school’s head teacher Steven Kandaya hailed Mr Luc’s Libraries for the library saying it will help learners to improve their performance in class.
“The library will help keep the learners busy and at the same time motivate them to work extra hard,” he said. One of the learners, Ruth Kondowe, who set to sit for her Primary School Leaving Certificate Examinations (PSLCE) in May this year, said the library will help them get the necessary books as they prepare for the examinations.
