Mighty Wanderers and Civil Service United will be looking for a positive start at the Songo International Tournament in Tete, Mozambique today.
The Nomads will face CD Chingale in the opening match at Compol Sul Stadium before Civil and hosts Uniao Desportivo de Songo face off at the same venue.
Both teams left the country yesterday for the tournament that will run from today to Tuesday.
Before departure Friday, Wanderers Chief Executive Officer Panganeni Ndovi said the tournament would be a good opportunity for the technical panel to assess the players ahead of the forthcoming season.
“The matches will provide competitive game time for our players, helping them build match fitness and sharpness ahead of the new season,” Ndovi said.
Coach Bob Mpinganjira has travelled with a strong squad comprising all new recruits namely goalkeeper Chancy Mtete, defender Masiya Manda, midfielder Nanison Mbewe, strikers Promise Kamwendo and Blessings Mwalilino.
Experienced defender Stanley Sanudi, midfielder Felix Zulu, Francisco Madinga, Sama Tanjong and Clement Nyondo are also in the squad.
In a related development, Civil have also travelled with all their key players.
Coach Abasi Makawa said while he would use the matches to assess the players, his charges would be aiming to win the tournament.
“We will play against tough teams but we are ready for them. We might be underdogs but we can pull a shocker,” Makawa said.
Defender Damiano Kunje, Rahman John, Charles Mafaiti, Moses Banda and Chifundo Ngapemba have travelled with the squad.
Meanwhile, Creck Sporting Club have cancelled their trip to Mozambique at the eleventh hour due to safety concerns.
Creck General Secretary Aaron Mtaya confirmed Friday that the decision follows unstable weather.
“We understand that Cyclone Jude will affect some parts of Mozambique. We thought it was to cancel the trip,” Mtaya said.
Creck were scheduled to travel to Lichinga for a two-day pre- season tournament.
