The Malawi Human Rights Commission (MHRC) has revealed that the country’s prisons and police formations are grappling with challenges faced by both inmates and facility management.
MHRC revealed this Thursday through the dissemination of its 2024 prison and police cell monitoring reports.
The commission found that facilities continued to face overcrowding, inadequate infrastructure, limited legal aid services, inadequate funding, understaffing and lack of food and care for children whose mothers were serving sentences in some facilities.
MHRC Commissioner Bonface Massa expressed optimism that authorities would address the issues identified.
On his part, Malawi Prison Service Commissioner General Masauko Wiscot admitted findings of the report.
