Malawi’s top six spellers, who secured first and second positions in the three categories of the 2024 Malawi National Spelling Bee grand finale held recently, will go into a preparatory camp before travelling to Nigeria for the Africa Spelling Bee in December this year.
Founder and Executive Director of the Malawi National Spelling Bee, Lewis Mbaula, who also chairs the Africa Spelling Bee, said Wednesday that the six spellers would undergo a camp to prepare them for the competition, which will feature participants from other African countries.
“It is all about guiding them and making sure that they are in shape ahead of the Africa Spelling Bee contest. We are optimistic that they will do well and fly the Malawi flag higher,” Mbaula said.
The top six spellers are Jordan Kowet from Southend Primary School, Nicole Manguluti from Sir Harry Johnston International High School, Zacheus Sinyangwe from Zolozolo Primary School, Faith Sakaja from Mponela 1 Primary School, Merville Kajasiche from Playdor Private School and Kayla Soko from Lilongwe Academy International High School.
Mbaula expressed gratitude to stakeholders for supporting the Malawi National Spelling Bee, which he said continues to promote the reading and writing culture in the country.
“We are thankful for the support for the Malawi National Spelling Bee because this is an educational fun activity in which learners compete in spelling out words across the country.
“At the heart of the programme is the desire to build vocabulary, improve the reading culture, confidence, and general cognitive skills,” he said.
Puma Malawi Energy expressed excitement at being associated with the Malawi National Spelling Bee, having recently offered 500 litres of fuel.
The support facilitated and eased the mobility of learners who travelled from the Northern and Southern regions to Lilongwe.
Sipho Uaeca, Managing Director of Puma Malawi, said the spellers represent the next generation of leaders and thinkers.
“By helping to ensure their safe and efficient transportation, we are proud to play a part in their journey to success,” Uaeca said.
He also wished the top six spellers the best as they represent Malawi at the Africa Spelling Bee competition.
The Malawi National Spelling Bee, organised annually since 2012 in partnership with the Ministry of Education, seeks to enhance literacy skills nationwide.
