Malawi Women’s National Football Team coach Lovemore Fazili has signed a new two-year deal, Malawi News has learnt.
This comes a month after Football Association of Malawi (Fam) offered him a new two-year contract.
His initial contract expired on December 31 last year, just two months after he led the Scorchers to their first ever Cosafa Women’s Championship with a 2-1 victory over Zambia in South Africa.
In an interview this week, Fazili said he has accepted the offer.
“We had fruitful discussions for the past two months. I signed the contract two weeks ago. I am happy with Fam project for women’s football,” Fazili said.
Fazili is expected to be in charge of the Scorchers as they will face Congo Brazzaville in the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (Wafcon) in February next year. The matches are scheduled between February 16 and 26.
The overall winner between Malawi and Congo will face Angola or Zimbabwe in the second round scheduled for October 20 and 28.
Reports indicate that Fazili has been offered an improved deal in his new contract.
Fam General Secretary Alfred Gunda said the association had finalised discussions with Fazili.
“The appointment for Mr Fazili was already done,” Gunda said.
The Scorchers failed to defend the Cosafa Women’s Championship after they lost 2-0 to Zambian in the semifinals.
Despite winning the Cosafa Cup in 2023, Fazili had waited for one year to have his contract renewed as Fam was waiting for consent from government.
Government is responsible for the salaries of national football team coaches, including Scorchers and junior sides.
But Fam was solely responsible for the salary of immediate past Flames coach Patrick Mabedi after the Ministry of Youth and Sports did not approve his perks.
Before this year’s tournament, Fam reshuffled the Scorchers technical panel which saw Maggie Chombo- Sadiki being appointed assistant coach to Fazili whereas Abasi Makawa was redeployed to the post of technical advisor.
