Kukoma Diamonds Babies ended the season on a high, lifting the Botsalt Southern Region Netball Committee (Soreneco) Under-23 League.
Diamonds Babies defeated MMF Maritime Sisters 44-37 at Blantyre Youth Centre on Sunday to emerge champions for the first time.
It was a tight affair as both teams were impressive but Babies counted on their home ground advantage.
They led 13-10 at the end of the first quarter and 22-19 at half time.
At the end of the third quarter, Diamonds were comfortably leading 36- 23 before Maritime tried to salvage pride in the last quarter.
Babies’ coach Towera Vinkhumbo-Nyirenda heaped praise on her charges.
“They did a fantastic job,” she said.
Zomba’s Prison Reserve won bronze after beating Nseche Sisters of Balaka 22-21.
During individual awards, Machinga’s Youth Impact Sisters Ivy Kachinjika was named the league’s best player while Nseche’s Bernadette Mateka won the best defender accolade.
Maritime’s shooter Triza Nsaku and Babies’ attacker Princess Banda Kumbweza won awards in their respective categories.
Botsalt Marketing representative McLeana Kalua, Sereneco chairperson Justice Katika, guest of honour Selube Chisanga and Netball Association of Malawi Vice General Secretary Charity Gondwe were in attendance.
