Kamwendo Banda, Phondo set to star at UMP Festival

Gospel musicians Ethel Kamwendo Banda and Theresa Phondo have been added to the lineup of the Urban Music People (UMP) set to be held at Cape Maclear in Mangochi from October 25 to 28 2024.

UMP organisers Chitoliro Productionz announced that Kamwendo Banda and Phondo will headline the gospel segment.

“Their music has profoundly touched hearts and will undoubtedly be a highlight of this year’s event,” UMP spokesperson Marie Thom said.

Thom added that the participation of the two artists at this year’s edition underscores their commitment to showcasing the very best of Malawian culture and creativity.

Kamwendo Banda has starred in several concerts and will perform her classics such as ‘Ndiumboni’ and ‘Watikondera’ at the festival.

Phondo has also made significant strides in her music career. Her debut EP has received widespread acclaim, with her single ‘Blessings’ amassing over 1.9 million streams worldwide and earning her accolades including Best Gospel Song and Best Afro/ R&B Artist.

Kamwendo Banda said she was excited to perform at the festival.

“I am looking forward to giving my best during the festival and sharing the stage with other artists,” she said.

Recently, Chitoliro Productionz released a comprehensive lineup of acts set to star at the event.

The lineup includes both local and international artists, some of whom were previously announced.

Dubbed UMP 2024: The Evolution, the festival aims to showcase artists in various disciplines including music, drama and film.

International artists set to perform include Zihle Madela, Ntuja, Maveriq Mavo and Naimah from South Africa; The Ells from Namibia; Raven Duchess and Faray the Great from Zimbabwe; Okie Worldwide from Tanzania; Muhunja from Kenya; Anesi from Nigeria; and The Remnants from Zambia.

Other international acts include Priest the Poet from Kenya, Luleka Mhlanzi and Thabo Mabaso from South Africa and Zambia’s visual artist Kwandu Muyamwa.

The list of local acts includes Onesimus, Phyzix, Giboh Pearson, Temwah, Tuno, Afana Ceez, Zonke Too Fresh, Trumel, Bucci, Nepman, and Stich Fray.

The lineup also includes poets such as Nyamalikiti Nthiwatiwa, Q Malewezi and Refilwe Ntopa, as well as dramatists Migrant Arts and University of Malawi and fashion designers such as Doll Mabel and Vivietta Designs.
