FCB Nyasa Big Bullets former coach Kalisto Pasuwa is back in the country amid continued links with the Malawi National Football Team’s vacant coaching job.
His return to Malawi coincides with Football Association of Malawi (Fam)’s Technical Sub-committee meeting, which is scheduled for this weekend.
At the meeting, committee members are expected to make recommendations on the recruitment process for the Flames permanent coach.
Fam President Fleetwood Haiya confirmed that Pasuwa arrived in the country yesterday.
But Haiya refused to divulge more information on Pasuwa’ return to Malawi.
“What I can say is that Pasuwa is still Flames interim coach,” Haiya said in a brief response.
The Zimbabwe Warriors former coach returned to his native country after leaving Bullets at the end of his contract.
Pasuwa’s local representative, Felix Ngamanya Sapao, said his client might be in the country to sort out personal issues.
“I have no idea [about] what he is doing in Malawi,” Sapao said.
The Flames are expected participate in the 2025 African Nations Championship (Chan) play-offs scheduled for next month.
Malawi will compete against Egypt, Algeria, the Gambia, Comoros, Gabon and South Africa for the remaining two slots at the tournament.
Pasuwa impressed as Flames interim coach after he helped the team to collect four points from the two TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) qualifiers against Burundi and Burkina Faso.
The Flames shared the spoils with Burundi following a goalless stalemate in Ivory Coast before they defeated Burkina Faso 3-0 at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe in November last year.
Meanwhile, sports analyst Parry Chinyama has said the arrival of Pasuwa has fuelled speculation that he would be named Flames’ permanent coach.
“[There is] no smoke without fire. I suspect that he is here to finalise the deal,” Chinyama said.
The position of Flames coach fell vacant after Fam fired Patrick Mabedi following poor results in all competitions.
Malawi will also face Namibia in the 2026 Fifa World Cup qualifiers in March.
