Kalimba steps in with first EP

Kalimba Band led by Vita Chirwa, who is also Musicians Union of Malawi (Mum) president, has started 2025 with a bang dropping an Extended Playlist (EP) titled Past and Present.

The legendary group which made headlines in the past years with a top-selling album titled Make Friends With the World, is determined to position itself in today’s world hence the new EP.

Chirwa said yesterday the new project will be distributed globally through Virgin Music, a division of Universal Music, with international distribution powered by Sony Music and The Orchard.

“We have also partnered with Malawian distributors New Wave Group to handle the promotion and distribution of the EP in the country,” he said.

Chirwa said Past and Present is a heartfelt musical journey that blends Kalimba’s signature sound with fresh influences, celebrating both their rich history and artistic evolution.

“Fans can expect a captivating mix of soulful melodies, rich instrumentation and powerful storytelling in the project,” he said.

Recorded at Mathumela Studios in Lilongwe and produced by Lulu and Chirwa, the five track EP project is the first done by Kalimba.

“The rest of the other projects were full albums but this one, we thought of doing an EP. As indicated and true to the title, Past and Present, features a blend of brand new compositions and reimagined versions of previously released songs – some of which remain undiscovered by many listeners,” Chirwa said.

He further said that the refined versions have been carefully crafted to meet global music standards, ensuring a fresh experience for all audiences.

Some of the songs in the EP include ‘AnyaGondwe,’ ‘One In Love,’ and ‘Aise.’

In 2023, Chirwa published a book detailing accounts of the original Kalimba of 1983.
