  I will continue carrying Malawi’s flag—Tay Grin

Renowned musician Tay Grin, popularly known as the Nyau King, said on Tuesday he will continue utilising his talent to promote and preserve the country’s culture.

On Sunday, the artist was decorated with the Best African International Cultural Ambassador Award during the African Achievement Awards held in United States of America (USA).

“I would like to thank the organisers of the African Achievement Awards for this prestigious honour. I carry my country’s culture wherever I go, sharing its beauty with the world,” he said.

Tay Grin, who has collaborated with artists such as Zambia’s Yo Maps in the track ‘So Mone’, said the award was not for him alone but, rather, “it is for my people and a historic win for Malawian culture on the global stage”.

“Winning the Best International Cultural Ambassador Award reinforces my mission of using music and art in general to bridge cultures and tell Malawi’s story on the global stage,” the artist, who performed at the red carpet event, said.

The rapper said it was inspiring to see how art could create unity and shine a light on the shared experiences of Africans while celebrating unique identities.

And for those who have, at times, diluted such awards, Tay Grin said true recognition was not just about the trophy but, rather, the impact behind it.

“These awards celebrate cultural exchange, hard work and the power of art to bring people together. If my work inspires even one person to embrace their roots or dream bigger, then the award has served its purpose,” he said.

At the end of the day, Tay Grin said the focus should be on the mission and message.

The artist once again travelled with Gule Wamkulu to the event, which came barely a week after he starred in the United Kingdom.

“My performance, which involves incorporating Malawian traditions and sounds, was well received. It is clear that audiences are eager for authentic African narratives,” he said.

Tay Grin said he was exploring potential partnerships.
