TNM Super League champions-designate Silver Strikers’ unbeaten record came to a halt when they lost 1-0 to Fomo at Mulanje Park on Wednesday.
Silver were on course to equalling Escom United’s record when they finished the 2009-10 season unbeaten but Prince Kajore scored the vital goal for Fomo.
The victory was a massive boost to Fomo as they kept their survival hopes alive.
This means the survival battle—which has been narrowed to three teams namely Fomo, Bangwe All Stars and Chitipa United—will go down to the wire.
Following the win over Silver, Fomo have 28 points from 29 matches, one point above Bangwe and two points above Chitipa.
Fomo will host Karonga United at Mulanje Park whereas Bangwe will face Creck Sporting Club at Balaka Stadium.
Chitipa will face relegation-bound Baka City at Karonga Ground.
Fomo coach Elvis Kafoteka said the survival battle was not over.
“We should guard against complacency as we have a crucial match against Karonga. But the boys deserve credit for a hard fought win,” Kafoteka said.
Silver coach Peter Mponda admitted it was a painful defeat.
“We did not create chances to win the match and we were flat,” Mponda said.
Chitipa defeated Moyale Barracks 2-0 at Karonga Ground.
Trouble Kajani and Francis Nyirenda scored for Chitipa. Meanwhile, Mighty Mukuru Wanderers are on the verge of finishing on position two following a 1-1 stalemate with Creck at Aubrey Dimba Ground in Mchinji. Misheck Bottoman scored for Wanderers but Frank Phiri scored the equaliser for Creck.
Wanderers have 55 points, three points above third-placed FCB Nyasa Big Bullets, who claimed a 3-1 victory over Karonga United at Kamuzu Stadium. The Nomads have a better goal difference of 37 against Bullets’ 21 heading into the final match of the season. Bullets will host Kamuzu Barracks whereas Wanderers will face Moyale in Mzuzu.
