Blantyre City arch rivals FCB Nyasa Big Bullets and Mighty Mukuru Wanderers are likely to meet in the round of 16 of the FDH Bank Cup following Tuesday’s national draw at Mpira Palace in Blantyre.
This will be a repeat of the 2022 semifinal when the two sides clashed, with Bullets proceeding to the final after they won 4-0 at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe, courtesy of goals from Babatunde Adepoju, Hassan Kajoke, Anthony Mfune and Gomezgani Chirwa.
Football Association of Malawi (Fam) and FDH Bank plc officials conducted the round of 32 and 16 draws.
During the draw, the first eight TNM Super League teams as of Sunday—namely Silver Strikers, Kamuzu Barracks, Mighty Mukuru Wanderers, Mzuzu City Hammers, FCB Nyasa Big Bullets, Creck Sporting Club, Moyale Barracks and Civil Service United— were seeded from meeting each other in the round of 32.
In the round of 32, Bullets will face Bangwe All Stars whereas Wanderers have been drawn against Cobbe Barracks, with the winners meeting in the round of 16.
In another interesting tie, Silver, who won the cup in 2021 and were knocked out in the quarterfinals in last year’s edition, have been drawn against Blue Eagles in the round of 32.
Other exciting matches involving Super League teams include Creck facing Fomo whereas Karonga United will play Mzuzu City Hammers.
Fam Competitions and Communications Director Gomezgani Zakazaka said the round of 32 matches will kick off next weekend.
“It was an exciting draw and we are expecting good football in this year’s FDH Bank Cup. What is remaining here is to fix the dates of the round of 32 matches. We are really happy with the way the draw has been conducted,” Zakazaka said.
On his part, FDH Bank Senior Marketing Manager Ronald Chimchere said they were looking forward to a great season.
“Last season we witnessed Santhe Admarc from Chipiku League reaching the quarter-finals. This is what we are expecting again this year. We want the so-called smaller teams to challenge themselves and go beyond the quarterfinals,” Chimchere said.
Bullets won the 2024 FDH Bank Cup after beating Mafco 3-0 at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe.
