4 Paralympic athletes to camp for 48 days

Malawi Paralympic Committee (MPC) has received a timely boost after Malawi National Council of Sports (MNCS) released funds to enable a five-member squad to start preparations for the 2024 Paris Paralympic Games Paris.

The squad will go into camp on Saturday at Malawi Paralympic Centre in Lilongwe in preparation for Paralympics games, which are set to run from August 28 to September 8.

Both MPC and MNCS officials confirmed the development, saying it would help the athletes prepare thoroughly for the games.

TO COMPETE AT THE GLOBAL STAGE—Banda

Two athletes, namely Mphatso Saukire (M T12, 400, 1500 M) and Taonere Banda (F T13 400, 1500), qualified for the event whereas Moses Misoya (M, T13, 200, 400) and Estere Nagoli (F T12, 200, 400) qualified, having been given a wild card.

Charles Luciano will accompany the squad as guide whereas Agnes Chikwakwa is the head coach, with John Kayange as assistant coach.

MNCS Public Relations and Communications Officer Edgar Ntulumbwa said they have released about K7.6 million to enable the squad to start preparations.

“We are looking at being in camp for about 40 days, which we feel are adequate in their quest to win medals,” Ntulumbwa said.

MPC Vice President Joseph Galanje said they are hoping to do well at the games.

“It is true we will be sending four athletes [two male and two female] to Paris. We thank the Sports Council for supporting this cause. An early camp is crucial as we are preparing for the biggest Paralympics competition where the cream of global athletes compete. We therefore need proper training,” Galanje said.
