Football Association of Malawi (Fam) needs K250 million for Malawi Women’s National Football Team, the Scorchers’ trip to Zambia for two friendly matches against the Copper Queens next week.
The two friendlies are scheduled for February 20 and 23 in Lusaka, Zambia. Addressing journalists Wednesday at Mpira Village, Chiwembe Township, Blantyre, Fam president Fleetwood Haiya said the association would everything possible to ensure the team travels to Zambia.

“Let me assure the nation that the Scorchers will play two friendly matches against Zambia. Will try everything possible to make sure the team is active during the Fifa window,” Haiya said.
His assurance comes after Malawi National Council of Sports (MNCS) indicated that there are no funds for the trip.
Haiya was optimistic that government would support the team’s trip to Zambia. “National teams are government properties and we are just agents managing on their behalf so we have written them about this trip,” he said.
MNCS Chief Executive Officer Henry Kamata was not readily available for his comment yesterday. Both teams are expected to include all their foreign country-based players as the matches will be played during the Fifa window.
Meanwhile, Scorchers coach Lovemore Fazili was excited saying the matches would help him prepare the girls head of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (Wafcon) qualifiers.
“The matches will help us to assess several players and also try different combinations,” Fazili said.
The Scorchers were scheduled to play Congo Brazzaville in the first round the Wafcon qualifiers, but the latter pulled due to lack of competitions and preparations.
Malawi progressed to the second round of the tournament without kicking a ball and they face either Zimbabwe and Angola in the second round.
