Commonwealth Games preparations underway

Malawi Commonwealth Games Association (CGA) has intensified preparations for the 2026 Glasgow Commonwealth Games to take place in Scotland.

The body courted officials from eight sport codes that have been earmarked to represent the country at the Games to evaluate preparations, strategies and expectations for the upcoming Games.

CGA Secretary General Henry Sakala described the meeting as a fruitful one, adding that Team Malawi would aim for podium finish in different events.

“We, as Malawi CGA, are impressed with the commitment the eight associations have shown. They have assured us that, this time around, they have talented athletes who can produce wonders if given enough, in terms of training and better facilities,” he said.

Sakala said they would hold a series of meetings to ensure that Team Malawi performs well at the event.

“We will continue engaging these associations and other stakeholders, including the corporate world, to join hands in funding these preparations as we all know that failing to prepare is planning to fail,” he said.

The eight sport codes which have been earmarked for the Games are athletics, boxing, cycling, judo, swimming, weightlifting, netball and para-athletics.

Malawi CGA Vice President Major General Kakhuta Banda chaired the meeting, which attracted national bodies of the eight sport codes.

“We convened a crucial meeting with representatives of eight sport disciplines earmarked for the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.

“The meeting marked a significant milestone in the country’s journey to the Commonwealth Games, and all stakeholders are now geared up. With the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games just around the corner, Malawi is poised to make its mark on the international sporting stage,” Kakhuta said.
