Chakwera Music Challenge to shortlist 15 next month

By Jimmy Chazama:

Organisers of the Chakwera Music Challenge contest have said 15 top songs will be seeded by judges next month.

The contest, dubbed Dolo Kwambiri Amavotera Chakwera, will see five winners walking away with K5 million each. The challenge was introduced by Minister of Labour Vitumbiko Mumba at a concert that was held at Civo Stadium in Lilongwe last year.

At the concert, Mumba, who also prides himself in working with legendary musician Mtebeti Wambali Mkandawire, indicated that they would be dangling more music competitions as part of uplifting the music industry.

In a statement released on Tuesday, organisers said following the shortlisting process, people would vote for their favourite songs on their official platform.

“The competition is open to all citizens and we will close submissions on January 28 2025. Any person is allowed to participate. We urge interested musicians to submit their entries before the deadline. The competition allows songs in any genre,” the statement reads.

The organisers have further said they would unveil judges soon. The judges would undertake the shortlisting of the 15 songs.

Commenting on the development, political analyst Caesar Kondowe said music challenges were acceptable since they help promote creativity in the country.

“Musicians will be promoted through the challenge and, at the same time, it will depend on what sort of music organisers want to promote. Are these songs not condemning others through language used?” Kondowe said.
