Two highly rated female referees Eness Gumbo and Bernadettar Kwimbira will be part of the officiating panel for the 20256 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (Wafcon) qualifier between Burkina Faso and Burundi.

The match is scheduled for February 26 at Stade 26 Mars in Bamako, Mali.

Communication from Confederation of African Football (Caf) addressed to Football Association of Malawi (Fam) indicated that Gumbo will be the fourth official while Kwimbira will be the first assistant.

In a related development, Caf has also appointed Martha Nyekanyeka as a referees’ assessor for the 2026 Wafcon qualifier between Tanzania and Equatorial Guinea at Azam Complex in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania next week.

Fam Referees Manager Duncan Lengani said the appointments were an indication that Caf had confidence in local referees.

“The appointment of Malawian referees to officiate international matches is a milestone for the country’s football development. We have no doubt that they will perform to the best of the capabilities in this assignment,” Lengani said.

The appointment of the female referees comes two months after Caf did not include local referees for the 2025 African Nations Championship (Chan).
