The 2024 edition of the Botsalt Under-23 Netball League finals throws off at Blantyre Youth Centre tomorrow with 14 teams vying for the championship.
Southern Region Netball Committee Chairperson Justice Katika said they are hoping for an exciting finish.
“All teams are gunning for the ultimate prize. They had enough time for preparations and nobody can complain. So we are certain that they will give out their best and perform well as there is a lot at stake,” Katika said.
He said this is a developmental competition which is crucial to the uplifting of the game’s standards.
“From this competition, we want to help develop players for the Malawi National Netball Team. This is an active league where talent is identified and nurtured. The competition is helping us groom players for various national teams,” Katika said.
The developmental competition attracts teams from Blantyre Urban, Thyolo, Mulanje, Mwanza, Neno, Nsanje, Chikwawa, Balaka, Phalombe, Chiradzulu, Mangochi, Machinga, Zomba and Blantyre Rural.
The teams compete at district level, with winners advancing to regional finals which determine the overall champions.
The league’s sponsorship was recently hiked to K14 million from K12 million.
Botsalt representative George Damson said they increased the sponsorship to help develop the sport.
“The competition acts as a foundation stage for the Queens. It is where players for our national team are groomed. So it is a very important competition for the development of netball,” Damson said.
