11 swimmers head to Namibia

Eleven swimmers have been selected to compete at the 2024 African Aquatics Zone IV Swimming Championship to run from December 4 to 7 in Windhoek, Namibia.

Malawi Aquatic Union (Mau) General Secretary Beatrice Makwenda confirmed the development but said full details would be released today.

“Some [swimmers] already left [for Namibia] but we have swimmers who also train out of Malawi. They are all assembling,” Makwenda said.

According to a post on the Malawi National Council of Sports Facebook page, Malawian swimmers will compete against opponents from 13 countries, including Angola, South Africa, Botswana, Mauritius,

eSwatini, Comoros, Mozambique, Zambia, Lesotho, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Madagascar and Seychelles.

“This is a remarkable opportunity for our swimmers to showcase their skills on the international stage,” the statement reads.

The Malawi squad comprises Ian Chongwe, Jeremia Makwenda, Davina Chongwe, Chimwemwe Luka Smit, Kayla Msonda, Tasunje Mkavea, Takomerwa Katandalu, Rhinniah Mzengo, Curtis Kanjadza, Danielle Kanjadza and Vinjeru Msiska.

Head Coach Yona Walesi and Team Manager Graig Chongwe are managing the team, offering guidance and tips before and during the championship.

Sports Council Public Relations and Communications Officer Edgar Ntulumbwa said they extended heartfelt wishes to the team as it embarks on its journey at the continental championship.

“Together, we believe in their potential to achieve great things,” Ntulumbwa said.
