Zambian giants Green Buffaloes have thanked Malawians for helping them to grow their Facebook page followership from 50,000 to over 62,000.
The increase followed the club’s signing of Mighty Mukuru Wanderers striker Christopher Kumwembe.
A post on Buffaloes’ Facebook page reads: “We want to say thank you to the people of Malawi for the great support you have given us as a club. You have made a very big impact to your Facebook page from 50k to 62k followers. Nyanta all the way.”
Several followers of the page said they were there because of Kumwembe.
“The page has grown significantly over the past weeks, all thanks to the acquisition of the versatile player from ‘aneba’ Malawi. The club’s future looks bright…and beautiful,” Chisaka wa Zulu wrote.
Alex Ntwana commented: “Kumwembe effect. You just earned a supporter from Malawi.”
“This is [the] beginning. More are coming. We are Malawi…we know how to support football. Come here one day and take only 20 Malawians to your stadium. You will see how Malawians give ‘moto’ to football,” another follower, Vincent Floriano Junior, wrote.
Buffaloes welcomed the former Civil Service United star on August 14 with a post that read: “Achimwene your son is here. Welcome to Green Buffaloes-Christopher Jacammah Kumwembe Malawian international mpulumutsi umsindisi.”
“Kumwembe hit the ground running in his first match, scoring once and providing an assist in Buffaloes’ 4-0 hammering of Indeni on August 25 in a Zambian Premier League match.
The performance was enough to convince the team’s technical panel to give him a place in the starting line-up against Forest Rangers and Chawanangwa Kaonga’s Zanaco, where he was also influential despite not scoring.
But Kumwembe missed the recent match against Red Arrows after pulling his muscles against Zanaco on September 1.
The immediate impact that the forward has made at the club has seen him being nicknamed ‘Mkango wa Lilongwe’ in a recent post on the club’s Facebook page.
