Writer targets thirty students with scholarship

United States of America (USA)-based writer and mentor Caroline Kautsire has introduced a scholarship initiative that is set to serve approximately 30 boys and girls in the country.

A total of K12 million has been set aside for the initiative.

The author of two books including What Kind of Girl? said yesterday that she realised that there was a lot she could contribute to the lives of young Malawian girls and boys, hence bringing the scholarship.

The Kamuzu Academy alumnus said her project was about responding to Malawi’s need for young girls and boys to have access to educational pathways. “After a successful book tour in Malawi in 2024, when I raised funds and donated food, books and school materials to 10 institutions, I decided to focus on the scholarship,” Kautsire said.

She said she could not do it alone, hence she created a GoFundMe page as one way of raising funds to make the scholarships available.

“This project will help students with both their tuition and upkeep funds. The identification of deserving students will be done through the selected school’s bursary committees.

The tuition money will be directly paid into the school accounts, with the upkeep money given directly to the students,” Kautsire said.

The writer further said the programme would help students in secondary school classes, with much focus on senior classes, which she indicated are often neglected by people and institutions.

Kautsire, who is also an actress, lives in Boston. She has lived there for more than 17 years.
