Thirteen people die in Independence Day accidents

Thirty-six road accidents have occurred during this year’s Independence Day celebration, up from eighteen road accidents registered in 2023.

This is according to a police report signed by Harry Namwaza, Deputy National Police Public Relations Officer.

The report indicates that thirteen people have been killed from the recorded accidents, up from eight people who were killed in 2023.

Among others, forty-four people have been injured from such accidents in 2024, a sharp increase from twenty-four people who were injured in 2023.

Meanwhile, the Malawi Police Service has said that ninety-one motorists were booked and fined for drunk driving, 337 for speeding, and 2,112 for exceeding vehicle sitting capacity.

The police have attributed the increase in accidents to the failure of motorists to adhere to road traffic rules and regulations.
