Blantyre-based actor, singer, dancer, writer and poet Owen Killapuseh Chaponda, who landed the leading role of Simba in the Lion King Musical, the world’s biggest theatrical show run by Disney last year, on Thursday interacted with students from Jacaranda School for Orphans in Blantyre.
The engagement through zoom comes as Jacaranda School for Orphans students are also set to stage The Lion King Musical.
The students who are playing various roles including that of Simba, which Chaponda played, engaged the United Kingdom-based star at will where he shared his experience.
Yankho Biswick, who plays young Simba in his interaction with Chaponda, engaged him on his challenging scenes playing the role of Simba.
And sharing his experience later, Chaponda described acting as telling a story and that it demands focus.
“Everything is possible as long as you work hard in whatever you are doing. I went through an eight weeks rehearsal to understand my role,” he said.
Chaponda said acting was a dream come true for him and that he will continue to represent Malawi in his acts.
“This is a dream come true for me. I am happy to represent Malawi,” he said.
Chaponda also hailed Jacaranda School for Orphans students saying they were doing an incredible job.
About Simba, Chaponda told britishblacklist.co.uk last year that it is a channel for people to be seen all their imperfections and to know that is what makes them perfect, that they are enough.
Jacaranda School for Orphans students also treated Chaponda to a performance.
The students are being drilled by actor, poet and playwright Frank Naligonje.
Jacaranda School for Orphans founder Marie Da Silva speaking earlier hailed Chaponda for his exceptional work.
“We are exceptionally proud of you for putting Malawi on the map,” she said.
The Lion King which is the sixth longest-running West End musical of all time and features classic hits is a story about a young cub who embarks on an incredible journey of self-discovery where he ultimately becomes king of the Pridelands.
