The Future is Female third activator session takes shape

The Future is Female, a transformative initiative that seeks to empower female artists in the country, made strides in its third activator session.

The Future is Female Project Lead Laura Schuerwegen, who is also Zomba City Festival founder, said yesterday that participants underwent training in areas that included co-creation.

“They had sessions about personal masterly and self-care as well as [a] health breakfast class with chef Gina Collis from South Africa. They also had presentations. So far, they have recorded two songs and started their production for Zomba City Festival,” Schuerwegen said.

She said they were excited to see their production come to life.

“Over the three activators, the girls have been learning a lot. It is great to see how they are implementing this knowledge already,” Schuerwegen said.

She also said they were happy to welcome sponsors and partners for the rest of the programme.

“We have docuseries set to air in the second half of 2025,” Schuerwegen said.

She said The Future is Female project is a platform dedicated to empowering women and fostering creativity.

“We have 11 female artists, out of whom two are incubated programme managers,” Schuerwegen said.

Blantyre-based poet Jane Senenje, who is one of the participants, said recently that the programme had helped her to establish connections with fellow artists.

“I have bonded with fellow artists. I have learnt so much, in terms of how I can manage my art as well as grow my brand,” Senenje said.

Singer and guitarist Maggie Kadrum also hailed the programme, saying it was helping female creatives grow their network and gain access to the benefits of different art disciplines through connection-building sessions.

The Future is Female project was founded as part of the European Spaces of Culture project and is dedicated to uplifting and amplifying the voices of women in the arts.
